Eight Or Better Overview
Eight or better, more commonly known as Seven Card Stud hi lo, is a
form of seven card stud that is a "split pot game" meaning the pot can be
split between the best "high hand" and the best "low hand" or worst hand.
Each player can use any five of the seven cards dealt to make the best
high hand and make the best low hand. The best high hand wins 1/2 the pot
and the best low hand wins the other half of the pot.
To qualify for a low hand, the player must have five cards
that are eight or lower where an Ace is counted as the lowest.
Pairs do not qualify but a straight and flush do qualify such as
As 2s 3s 4s 5s.
This tool is used to calculate your odds for an
Eight or Better scenario.
- You'll be presented with a popup where you can select between 3 to 7 cards for example:
- After you have the cards for at least two players, the app will calculate the odds
upon closing the card selector screen.
Understanding the results
This Odds Calculator gives you the ability to view the following percentages
with 2 to 6 players.
- Win Hi% Chance of winning the high hand.
- Tie Hi% Chance of tying the high hand.
- Win Lo% Chance of winning the low hand.
- Tie Lo% Chance of tying the low hand.
- Scoop% Chance to win the hi and low hand
- EQ% indicates the "expected share" of the pot expressed if as a percentage(%).
-
over a player's hand indicates they currently have the highest
equity or highest (win + tie) percentage depending on the setting
checked in the top right corner.
-
over a player's cards indicates they cannot possibly win given the current table
state.
How is Equity Calculated?
Equity is calculated by adding the total number of wins to the sum of the
fractions of each tie for the players' hand plus the sum of the fraction
for each scoop where no one qualified for the low, and dividing that
amount by total number of possible outcomes.
Total Wins +
sum(each tie / number of hands in each tie) +
sum(each scoop where no one wins the low / number of hands in each scoop where no one wins the low)
Divided by (/) Total Hands
Example:
- Each outcome that is a tie increments the players' tie count by "1"
- Each outcome that results in a tie increments the players equity count by
one(1) / number of players that tie for that specific outcome.
In this case there are only two players so the most players that could
tie for given outcome is (1 / 2 players).
- Each outcome that does not have a low goes to the player(s) who
have the high hand or 1 / number of players that scoop for that specific outcome.
In this case there are only two players so the most players that could
scoop for a given outcome is (1 / 2 players).
-
Since there are only two players in this example, the tie percentage will always be the same for each player and
the scoops per outcome will either be 1 or 1/2 players for each outcome. As more players are in the hand,
equity may vary for each hand and the number of players that tie on any outcome may also vary.
