Holdem Overview
Texas Hold'em, often known simply as Hold'em, is a form of poker that consists of a player being
dealt two cards face down known as "hole cards" and then five "community cards" being dealt face up.
The community cards can be used by any of the players.
The objective is for each player make the best
five card hand using any combination of the hole cards and community cards. The player with the best
hand wins the pot. If there is a tie then the pot is divided
among each player that qualified for the best hand.
The Holdem Odds Calculator gives you the ability to view the win, tie and equity percentages
for 2 to 10 players. This will allow one to better understand just how strong a hand is at any given point.
It can also show you hands that might have a lower percentage of winning but a higher percentage
of equity.
- Select cards for each of the players by clicking on either of the two player cards.
- You'll be presented with a popup where you can select two cards.
-
After you have selected cards for each player you can specify the flop, turn, and/or
river by clicking on them. You do not need to specify these to calculate odds as they are optional.
-
Once you have selected the players hand, the window will close and you will see a
calculating dialog appear as calculation is performed.
-
If board cards have been selected, with two or more hands, a number will appear next to hands that
are behind but have "outs". An out is any unseen card that, if drawn, will improve a player's hand to
one that will make that hand likely to win or have the highest equity against all other hands selected.
- If a number appears next to the cards, you can touch the number and a screen
will pop up showing the cards that are "outs" for that hand.
Understanding the results
The results are displayed as follows:
- Win% indicates the likelihood of that player winning.
- Tie% indicates the likelihood of that player tying.
- EQ% indicates the "expected share" of the pot expressed if as a percentage(%).
-
over a player's hand indicates they currently have the highest
equity or highest (win + tie) percentage depending on the setting
checked in the top right corner.
-
over a player's cards indicates they cannot possibly win given the current table
state.
-
over a player's cards indicates he or she has outsto get the highest
equity or (win + tie) percentage depending on the setting checked in the top right corner.
Equity calculation
Equity is calculated by adding the total number of wins to the sum of the
fractions of each tie for the players' hand and dividing that amount
by total possible outcomes.
(Total Wins +
sum(each tie / number of hands in each tie)) / Total Hands
Example:
Player 1: Qc Qd
Player 2: Qs Qh
Flop: 9c 9d 9s
- There are 990 remaining outcomes.
- Each outcome that is a tie increments the players' tie count by "1"
- Each outcome that results in a tie increments the players equity count by
one(1) / number of players that tie for that specific outcome.
In this case there are only two players so the most players that could
tie for given outcome is (1 / 2 players).
- Each player has a tie count of 990 ties out of 990 outcomes (100%) and has
an equity increase of 495 out of 990 outcomes.(50%).
-
So equity in this scenario is (Total Wins + Total Fraction of ties for each player) / Total Outcomes
or 0 + 495 / 990 = 50%
Since there are only two players in this example, the tie percentage will always be the same for each player and
the equity will equal (win + 1/2 the tie). As more players are in the hand, equity may vary for each hand
and the number of players that tie on any outcome may also vary.
